8 Signs an Employee is Truly Exceptional (That Do Not Appear in A Performance Review) by Jeff Haden

Article by Jeff Haden posted in Linkedin

We can all spot a great employee: she's dependable, proactive, hardworking, a great leader, and a great follower. She brings a wide variety of easily defined -- but hard to find -- skills to the table.
Some employees, though, are exceptional. They have skills and qualities that aren't evaluated on performance appraisals but make a huge impact on that individual's performance, the performance of the people around her, and especially on the company's results.
Here are eight signs an employee is truly exceptional:

The Rules for Being Human - Cherie Scott Carter

The Rules for Being Human
  1. You will receive a body.
You may like it or hate it, but it will be yours for the entire period of this time around.
  2. You will learn lessons.
You are enrolled in a full-time informal school called LIFE.  Each day in this school you will have the opportunity to learn lessons.  You may like the lessons or think them irrelevant and stupid.
  3. There are no mistakes, only lessons.
Growth is a process of trial and error…experimentation.  The ‘failed’ experiments are as much a part of the process as the experiment that ultimately ‘works’.
  4. A lesson is repeated until learned.
A lesson will be presented to you in various forms until you have learned it. When you have learned it, you can then go on to the next lesson.
  5. Learning lessons does not end.
There is no part of life that does not contain its lessons.  If you are alive, there are lessons to be learned.
  6. ‘There’ is not better than ‘Here’
When your ‘there’ has become a ‘here’, you will simply obtain another ‘there’ that will again look better than ‘here’.
  7. Others are merely mirrors of you.
You cannot love or hate something about another person unless it reflects something you love or hate about yourself.
  8. What you make of your life is up to you.
You have all the tools and resources you need.  What you do with them is up to you.  The choice is yours.
  9. Your answers lie inside of you.
The answer to Life’s questions lie inside you.  All you need to do is look, listen and trust.
  10. You will forget all of this.
  11. You can remember it whenever you want.

The Research is Clear: Long Hours Backfire for People and for Companies

11/1/2018

By Sarah Green Carmichael

Managers want employees to put in long days, respond to their emails at all hours, and willingly donate their off-hours — nights, weekends, vacation — without complaining. The underlings in this equation have little control; overwork cascades from the top of the organizational pyramid to the bottom. At least, that’s one narrative of overwork. In this version, we work long hours because our bosses tell us to. (That’s the version most on display in the recent New York Times opus on
Amazon.)

But there are other explanations out there. There’s another that says all of us, including senior managers, are basically flotsam buffeted about by the eddies of economic incentive, corporate culture, and technologies that keep the office
just a tap away. In this version, there’s no one really dictating the norms; we’re all just reacting to macro forces beyond our control.  Click below to read more...

How to Deal with Passive Aggressive Behaviour

By Suzie Doscher

Being subjected to passive aggressive behaviour from anybody -- be this in a shop, at home, in school or at work -- can be not only confusing, but also hurtful and uncomfortable.
Frequently this behaviour and manner of speaking come from someone who has not learned how to express emotions, let alone negative ones. Instead of being in touch with their feelings, they redirect these emotions in a passive aggressive manner. Usually the person is not even aware of it.
Obviously this is a generalization and in no way should be thought of as the truth for everybody who behaves passive aggressively. Sometimes people are just having a bad day and letting it out with inconsiderate and disrespectful manners.
Common characteristics of passive aggressive people: ...click 'read more'
