Many of my clients tell me that they are strategic. And they are proud of it, even if they are not recognized for their strategic skill. When they are looking for a new job, they invariably want a position that they deem as “strategic.” Strategy is King. But we aren't all chess masters. While everyone knows being strategic is a cornerstone of success and it’s what your line manager and potential employers want to see, few know what it entails. Here’s a yes-no quiz that might shed some light. Strategy Quiz 1. Do you have a sense of the chessboard of life, recognizing that each move you make has consequences and implications? 2. Do you set goals that are not just achievable but also contribute to the bigger picture? 3. Are you more proactive than reactive? 4. Do you have a deep understanding of the terrain you navigate? 5. Do you not only consider your immediate surroundings but also anticipate future changes and challenges? 6. Are you agile and adaptable, ready to pivot when circumstances require? If you answered Yes to all six questions, congratulations! If not, notice where you may want to add some nuanced development so you can become more strategic. You might want to consider getting a coach or a mentor for support. My clients are right, being strategic is an invaluable skill. And the good news is, it is a skill that you can develop to help guide you through the complexities of life. Being strategic takes a commitment to purposeful action, a dedication to continuous learning, and a recognition that success is not just about reaching the destination but enjoying the journey.
